We have quite the tendency, in this country, to assume that our food is on the lower end of the quality spectrum. We regard other countries as superior in their cooking, laud the French as masters of Cuisine, the Italians as lovers of fine dining, and the Indians and Chinese dominate the takeaway market place – about the only British contender there is the good old fish & chip shop. It seems to us that about the only nation we regard ourselves as better at food is the Germans – nobody thinks that cold Bratwurst is ever the solution to any food dilemma.
Well, we couldn’t be more wrong. Britain is a country full of wonderful food, covering every conceivable taste there is. Hell, we even produce our own delicious wines. Britain contains four different nations, each with their own specialities and favourites, and it would be frankly criminal for anyone of us not to have explored the tastes of our neighbours before heading overseas.
Next time you tuck into a roast, meat perfectly cooked, veggies steaming, gravy glistening and potatoes perfectly roasted, remember that this is proper British food.
