More than simply an industry magazine, Tramways and Urban Transit is the official journal of the Light Rail Transit Association and as such offers the definitive word on all things light rail.

This rather slight monthly magazine covers all the on-going light rail and tram news, both in the UK and worldwide. It has a particular focus on the development of new tram and light rail systems, with features on their progress alongside profiles and factfiles of successful existing systems. Tramways and Urban Transport also includes a worldwide review, community letters and a section devoted to classic tram nostalgia.

Public transport really is the way of the future. With the right levels of investment it is easy to see every city in the UK getting its own tram or light rail system, and it really is a worthwhile investment. Cars aren’t going to be around forever, and even if they manage to hang on for another 50 years or so it is going to get ludicrously expensive to run one, and ever more difficult to find a spot to park. It makes a lot of sense to have a transit system, getting people where they want to go across the city, and there is certainly going to be the demand for it. As it stands, the most effective way of doing this is either the underground rail or the tram systems that have been implemented in more than a few cities, meaning that the subject covered by Tramways and Urban Transit is going to become ever more important.

Where we like to look, however, is to the future. The best example of a futuristic transit system has to be that found in Matt Groening’s magnum opus Futurama – a series of powered transparent suction tubes that take you wherever you like to go. Perhaps someday this magazine will be Tramways, Tubes and Urban Transit… NB
