Trains is not only a wonderfully straightforward, ronseal (it does exactly what it says on the tin) style title for a magazine, it is also the largest and longest-running train and rail based magazine in North America, having been founded in Wisconsin way back in 1940.
There’s a lot of love in the world for trains of all shapes and sizes, and we think that the reason behind this is a simple one. Trains solve the age old problem of how to get people and goods to a destination reliably and with comparatively little effort. You may think that road travel is arguably more versatile, and it is true that trains need rails to get to their destinations, but once that is set up they are far more reliable and safe than road travel could ever hope to be. Build a rail line between two places and you have pretty much completely connected them – anything that needs to arrive or depart can do so with ease.
Perhaps another reason for the love of trains is the fact that they used to represent the transport of the masses. Very few people could afford cars, particularly before they had been invented, and as such the primary method of transportation for holidays and everything else was the train you simply needed to buy a ticket rather than the whole vehicle. Train travel nowadays is hugely expensive and under-used – we would love a return to the days of mass travel and mass appreciation. NB
