Sometimes a magazine will have a quality that is difficult to get across in words. The French phrase’ je ne sais quoi’ is a good place to start, that indefinable something, but this is such a wonderfully British magazine – apple-picking, crumble, chutney and cups of tea feature heavily – that it wouldn’t quite be appropriate.
We’re going to have a go at describing the feeling of the Simple Things through mental imagery. Right, imagine that you’ve just gone for a long walk with the family, and the family dog. It was a little cold out, but the kids kept warm running around, throwing a ball for the dog, whilst everyone else was wrapped up warm. Afterwards, you head to a country pub, for a restorative pint or cup of tea, and there is a roaring log fire. As you sit there, ensconced in a comfy, old-fashioned armchair, feet slowly toasting on the fire, you are experiencing something very similar to the feeling of the Simple Things.
What matters in life is not money or material good, but memories. The Simple Things isn’t fancy or pretentious, you’ll find no ludicrous fashion or overpaid footballers here. No, it’s full of time-tested, homespun, earthy-ness, and on top of all that it’s a really beautifully made magazine. Marvellous. NB
