We can’t help but think that comparatively little has changed in the editorial stance and content covered by Shooting Times & Country magazine since its beginnings way back in 1882. Those who were devoted followers of the magazine back then would probably still be fascinated by it now if they were to come back from the dead and fancy a bit of shooting. Sure, they might be a little confused by the use of cars to travel to and from shooting trips, but the essence of the sport has changed very little since their time.

It is still a noble sport, despite what those who oppose it say. There is comparatively little suffering involved, particularly with a good marksman, and the animals live a good life. The similarities to the hunting of 1882 are astonishing – the gentlemen still spend their time stalking across heathland and moors, patiently hunting their prey, or in organised gamebird shoots, using gundogs to retrieve any hits. Then the quarry is put to good use in delicious recipes. It is a simple but winning formula, and we can see why it has endured so well. NB
