Ethical entrepreneurs, responsible business, community and sustainability

Ethos is a magazine for and about people who embrace new and innovative ways of doing business. We cover stories about the most progressive business leaders, their teams, ethos and ideas to give you a unique insight into how they’re changing how business is done.

We believe that business can be a force for good, so through Ethos we aim to champion and highlight those who are changing the world through their ethical aims and innovative ideas. Business should be about people and ideas – business models are simply vehicles.

Writing about regional, national and international social enterprises and ethical businesses from our base in Liverpool, UK, we look at great businesses and the sector’s success stories. They are stories about community and responsibility, fresh ideas and free thinking entrepreneurs. They may be ethical and innovative, but they’re interesting and exciting.

Our readers engage with our stories because they’re just that – great stories. Ethos highlights the businesses that surround us every day, the businesses that are making their mark and doing something different. The world of social enterprise is home to stories and successes which just don’t make conventional business sense; and these are the tales which draw people in and connect them to their local economies in a way that ‘business as usual’ can’t.

Ethos 25 is all about turning ideas into action. Every issue starts with a question: how do ideas actually get into the world? Not the pitch-deck version – the real one, where someone has to do the unglamorous work of making a concept come to life. This issue is full of that work. Our cover story, about TEDx, shows how it’s sharing ideas peer-to-peer – not handed down from on high – that spark action. We travel to Finland, where foraging hands knowledge and provision back to individuals and communities, outside the formal food system and in Gaza, young people connected to the Earth Prize are building hope through agency and problem-solving, rather than waiting for it to arrive. In Madagascar, we learn about community-led conservation work that’s happening in partnership with Chester Zoo and we hit Hamburg for 48 hours, too. Our cover story catch up contemplates a startling pivot from Allbirds while our dive into design plays its role in highlighting patterns and process: Artek’s design philosophy treats good design as a democratic, everyday good – not a luxury abstraction and we talk to Gehl about designing cities around how people actually live – not how planners assume they should. And whether it’s a brand building trust through story or a citizen shaping the place they live, the same golden thread shimmers through it all: ideas only matter once someone makes them happen
