The Oldie magazine covers humour, satire, current interest articles, book reviews, film and theatre. It was created in 1992 by Richard Ingrams who used to edit the Private Eye. The original aim according to Ingrams was to create ‘an antidote to youth culture’ as well as a magazine with an emphasis on good writing, humour and quality illustrations. It is designed for older readers who want a magazine with more bite. Peter O’Toole said that is a great magazine ‘for the pure and the impure.’ If this sounds like your sort of magazine then read on.

The Oldie magazine will include amusing current affairs articles which often highlight the absurd nature of today’s politics or youth culture. There are also regular sections such as the ‘I Once Met’ column, where readers write about their encounters with interesting and amusing famous people. There is also a rather silly regular column called ‘Still with Us’, which catches up with people you might have thought were dead! By now you will have a pretty good idea about what this magazine is all about.

This magazine could be seen in some respects as being a place for the ‘grumpy’ old men and women of the world to get together and complain about society and the ridiculous nature of many aspects of our world today. This isn’t a negative thing though; we think this is what makes the magazine really great. We loved the satirical nature of this publication. We think older readers looking for a place to vent and get some good quality writing which keeps the older generation in mind will love it. From boat cruises to parish councillors, no one is safe from the writers of Oldie magazine.

Our favourite regular section is ‘the Old Un’s Diary’ which contains ‘all the news that matters and some that doesn’t’, with sections on the best places to visit for fun exhibitions and the latest sporting news along with the funny remarks made by the commentators. There are also brilliant tips on how to save yourself some much needed cash. There really is something for everyone in this magazine. Readers who are more mature but still young at heart should look no further than Oldie magazine.
