Aimed at the more distinguished woman who is richer in years, The Peoples Friend magazine is a warm and cosy weekly publication, the kind that goes perfectly with a cup of tea and a biscuit.

This lovely mag offers a good blend of ingredients. Each issue features well-written short stories and poems, nostalgia and memories from times gone by, activities and projects such as knitting and gardening, features on wonderful British towns, health advice, cookery and more. You will find an eclectic but fascinating mix of articles on many different traditional subjects in The People’s Friend, and this is a magazine that is proudly British (with a slight bias towards Scotland, being published there.

We think that this magazine represents fantastic value for a weekly mag given the impressive amount of content that it packs into every issue – though one potential trade-off is that the paper used in its production isn’t of the highest quality, though it is more than good enough to last as long as you need. More important than the value, however, is the really rather wonderful tone.

It is the magazine equivalent of those old Werther’s Original adverts, all cosy and welcoming. We hadn’t really thought too much about the origin of these sweets (no doubt favourites of a fair few of the readers of The People’s Friend, and with good reason), so were a little surprised to find that they are German. Named after the town of Werther, Werther’s Originals are undeniably teutonic in nature, yet they somehow feel like a British institution.

Speaking of British Institutions, the People’s Friend has been bringing older women a wonderful magazine since 1869, and we like to think that every edition from the very first to the most recently released has had the same lovely, warm feeling about it. NB
