“Have you tried turning it off and on again!?!” This would be the rallying cry of an army of Sysadmins, gathering together under a flag with the friendly Linux penguin on, as they prepare to assault the twin fortresses of system failure and user ineptitude. Quite why it is that machines as complex and futuristic as the modern computer should work simply after powering down and re-initialising is beyond a humble writer, but the simple act of pressing the on/off switch exorcises the demons that prevent processes from properly performing. We know there is no magic there, but it certainly feels like it sometimes. For the majority of computer-related problems it is normally a case of PEBKAC – that is, Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair, and though we all do our best this is frankly rather hard to avoid.
Admin magazine is, as stated above, a hugely practical and helpful magazine for those sysadmins who face the constant struggle to keep their company’s computers up, running and linked together. The sections detailing the automating of simple tasks seems like a hugely good idea to us – if a simple program can save you the effort of some of the more boring aspects of your job then that is a wonderful thing. Just don’t let the boss find that out, or you may be out of a job! NB
