Published twice a year, Garageland is an incredibly fascinating London based magazine that looks at the world of contemporary art, culture and ideas.

Each issue of Garageland has a central theme which is explored through an eclectic, varied and unexpected range of approaches – examples of the themes include paint, machismo, rock and roll and migration. It brings you get a fascinating discourse on an art and culture subject from many different perspectives. Garageland also has a film club section looking at experimental and art films, and reviews of exhibitions, books and interviews with artists.

Garageland represents the kind of space where you will find the art on the edge, that which exists outside of the mainstream yet is critical to the art world’s survival. It is the works of art that are willing to push boundaries, to challenge preconceptions and explore the taboo, the unrecognised and the shocking.

It is in this vein that the issue of Garageland devoted to ‘paint’ covers such things as an mash up between erotic fiction and a painting technique manual, a look at the role played by faeces in painting – though obviously not the word they used (apparently an artist sold a pot of his… output… for £80,000) and ‘the artist as a serial killer’. We can definitely say that Garageland pulls no punches in its exploration of the world of art and culture, and this is something that the art world definitely needs.

The idea of devoting the majority of each issue to a central theme is a good one – it allows contributions of completely different natures that are yet all tied at a thematic level, making the magazine nicely coherent despite the strangeness of the work it features. If you fancy a look at the world art through a non-mainstream channel, Garageland is a fine choice. NB
