There are those who might think that educating those aged 0-5 would be a breeze, a walk in the park. ‘Oh, they don’t really know anything difficult, it must be an absolute doddle to teach kids about such simple things’ runs that line of thought. Well, that’s absolute rubbish. Teaching kids at such an early age is one of the most important factors in shaping who they grow up to be. It is at this level of development that youngsters are forming opinions, thoughts and methods of learning that will affect them greatly in later life. You really can’t sit back and let things happen, or trust that you know more than them, instead it is a highly complex process. What’s more, kids are one hell of a handful to teach. In my spare time I’ve done a little volunteering at the local museum, and on one occasion found myself running an activity for primary school kids based around science and experimentation. Phew, what a day that was. It takes authority to be able to stop kids running amok, and never trust that once they’ve made a paper aeroplane they won’t instantly throw them at each other. From that day alone I have gained the greatest of respect for anyone who can sit down with these tiny terrors and actually teach them something new. Early Years Educators, we salute you. NB
