There is something that has always appealed to me about America in the 1950s and 1960s. There’s something to be found in the iconography and design, in the way that it looked towards the future rather than the past, attempting to usher in a new era of technology and easy living.
This is of course a terribly idealised notion. America in the real 1950s was hardly a place to celebrate, full of inequality of the worst kind, but nevertheless there’s something intangible about it which is wonderful…
Ah, I know what it is. It is the sense of optimism. The idea that American’s could do anything and be anything, could control the world through science and could even travel to the moon if required. Did you know that Ford designed a nuclear powered car, called the Nucleon? The design of it was reminiscent of a rocket, and it had a small nuclear reactor as an engine. Thankfully – from the perspective of those who don’t wish to be irradiated – this never came to pass, but that sense of ‘we can do anything’ was always there.
Atomic Ranch recaptures a little of that now retro futurism, and for that alone it is worth a space on your shelf.
