The New Statesmen is a bit of an under-appreciated gem; hidden away beneath a seemingly infinite number of weekly magazines full of overly bright colours, bold typefaces and exclamation marks. Look beyond these magazines and you will find an understated yet powerful magazine that brings you what you actually need to know, rather than frivolous trivialities designed to keep your mind off things.
Being informed about current events in an incredibly valuable thing – gaining insight and information about the world around you from a bevy of intelligent and articulate writers such as those in the New Statesman is doubly so. This magazine – incidentally, the current affairs and newspaper magazine of the year – covers pretty much everything, devoting as much space to culture and society as it does to the larger topical issues facing the world today. It is not afraid to tackle the important questions – tension in the middle east, US politics and more, but also covers science, nature and trends in television as well.
There is a rather left-wing flavour to The New Statesman, but it never forces this upon the reader unlike other political magazines. If we had our way The New Statesman would be required reading for pretty much everyone – there is no excuse for being uninformed about the world around you. NB
