What is it about Japan that has made it one of the most astoundingly creative and innovative cultures in the world? We don’t know here at Newsstand but we are very grateful for it.
Japanese culture is unendingly fascinating, bringing a perspective and imagination that is really rather lacking over here. Perhaps the greatest example of this is the wonder, beautiful films made by Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki. These films are astoundingly elegant and gorgeously designed and animated productions the world has ever seen, putting Disney to shame. These films, several of which have successfully been released in the West such as My Neighbour Totoro, Ponyo and perhaps most famously Spirited Away, tell amazing stories that seem to come from a world far removed from any we could think of.
For an example you could watch Howl’s Moving Castle, telling the tale of a young girl cursed to look old, a seemingly ageless wizard who travels in a mechanical castle that walks across the land and a living flame. Or perhaps you fancy a story about a man/pig who flies fighter planes in the Adriatic sea? Then Porco Rosso is the film for you. There is an astonishing world of imagination out there, and we highly recommend Ghibli films as the best way to dip a toe into the waters of Japanese culture. nb
