A common qustion we are asked at Newsstand is which magazines are suitable for the very youngest audience. It’s a tricky one of course, as it will depend on the interests development of the toddler in question. At the end of the day it’s no use us pretending that a 3 year old will do anything other than tear up and eat a magazine regardless of whats on the cover - but surprisingly sometimes magazines are marketed at such an age.

It does underline a point though, that there is a growing number of family members who consider a magazine, whether on it’s own or part of a subscription, a much better gift for a little one that the usual toys that, debatably, are a waste of time, money and resources. We agree, of course.

However, it’s too easy to think that a wooden toy or a book is so much more wholesome. Newsstand’s view is get yourself a magazine that you like and let the wee one play with it once you’ve had a good read. Reuse and recycle etc.

Having said that - once children are up towards five and six years old, there are some great magazines that they’ll enjoy and that may even teach them a few things whilst encouraging them to read. Plus, we can’t deny that getting a subscription as a present is something that lasts the entire duration as opposed to the “five minutes and then it’s bust” scenario - which, let’s face it, is depressing on so many levels.
