Here at Newsstand we reckon that the biggest lure to the detectorist – fair enough on that word, metal detective would have sounded a bit strange – is the possibility of uncovering a massive, ancient hoard that had been lost to humanity for untold ages. Perhaps less appealing is the likelihood of uncovering a waterpipe.
We love the idea of investigating the past by getting out there and actually trying to find some of it. Too many hobbies involve simply being stuck indoors, doing something again and again – why not get out there in the great outdoors and see what you might find?
It could be a potentially very, very lucrative move. Though we’re sure that all metal detectors do it simply for the love of history and the hobby, there is a decent amount of the worth of any important historical find that goes to the person who found it. Sort of not-quite finders-keepers but for grown-ups. There have been some astonishing hoards of coins and jewellery found in recent years, but we can’t help but wonder what drove people to bury their most precious belongings in the ground. Mind you, nowadays that’s probably safer than putting it in the bank. NB
