Science is the future. There is no arguing with that; as we move ever forward into an uncertain future (we occasionally wander round the streets, grabbing people by the shoulders and saying ‘It’s 2012!” – you might remember an old episode of The Simpsons where Lisa gets married – that was set in 2010, two years ago, and there were androids for goodness sake!) we will become a race ever more intertwined with technology and dependent upon science.
It is a shame, therefore, that the vast majority of people get their fix of scientific knowledge and news through the newspapers, a form of media that hasn’t always covered science particularly well (although The Guardian does a pretty decent job nowadays). You will find far more fascinating reading and in-depth analysis of science in the New Scientist, where science is given the space it needs to consider stories beyond a superficial level of “Researchers from ‘X’ University have discovered that ‘Y’ does ‘Z’”, something all too common. There is no critical analysis of science in the newspapers, simply an unquestioning acceptance or outraged pouring of vitriol at the idea that scientists say one thing and then have the audacity to change their mind when new evidence arises! How dare they have a different view now to the past, that must mean they were lying before!
Science deserves our respect and our attention, and New Scientist is a fantastic example of science journalism done right. NB
