Anyone who grew up watching Top Gear will remember that terrifying day when Richard Hammond ploughed himself into the ground at around 200mph in a jet powered car capable of reaching speeds of up to 300mph. The dragster car goes so fast that the driver is experience the same kind of force as fighter pilots do, making it very hard to stop. Amazingly, Hammond made a full recovery when the accident had every potential to be fatal, but I remember cheering with my family when we found out.
Top Gear really would not be the same without Hammond, he is the butt of every joke and always laughs along. The trio know everything there is to know about cars between them all, and have come up with some hilarious challenges which somehow normally result in Clarkson winning.
My favourite challenge had to be the fierce attempts to destroy a Toyota Hilux because they are notoriously tough cars. They left it in the sea, drove it into a tree in Somerset, smacked it with a wrecking ball and even set fire to it. They eventually hoisted up onto a tower block and detonated the building underneath the car. You’d think that that might do the trick, but the car is still standing in the Top Gear studio, and is still drivable. My uncle, who has owned a Toyota Hilux for quite some time, was thrilled!
