For me Italian fashion is embodied by one designer brand, and that is Dolce & Gabbana. These men know how to dress a woman. Their clothing embodies femininity and class, whether it be via light summery prints or moody winter lace. They believe in structure and using undergarments to perfect and smooth a woman’s shape. Gabbana once said in an interview ‘I don’t are about the nationality, the body, short or small, or big or fat or skinny, femininity and the power of femininity is beautiful.’ And how right he is. Their designs can create that notion of confidence and femininity via elegant shapes and posture.
It’s so refreshing to come across designers who want imperfect women so long as they own those imperfections. Too often do we find ourselves obsessing over these coat hanger models with no defining features, but D&G often say that they like natural make up or even the bravery to leave the house without any, they despise the modern and extensive use of photo manipulation and simply enough, they are a brand to be lived in, not hung in a wardrobe.
This, I am tempted to say, is a trend widely acknowledged throughout Italy. Living life, eating good food and drinking good wine, having care free and spontaneous fun as often as possible, surrounding oneself with friends, family and comforts. I think England could learn a few lessons from their daring and darling way of living.
