A delightfully named magazine this one. Fancy Fowl is the UK’s best selling poultry fancier magazine on the market, and has over 30 years of experience in the art of keeping our feathered friends.

Each issue contains the latest poultry news, as well as reports from the clubs, societies and show events across the country. There are focused features examining particular breeds, columns from experienced poultry fanciers and a Q&A section with a vet for any poultry health issues, as well as a strong sense of community in the letters section. Whether you prefer the duck, chicken or even the turkey, if you like poultry you’ll love this.

The ancient humans who domesticated the chicken, amongst other types of fowl, were onto a very good thing. It is hard to think of a good fry up in the morning without a couple of lovely fried eggs, and the thought of going any length of time without a tasty bit of chicken to eat is quite dispiriting.

This magazine isn’t about eating chickens, if anything it is quite the opposite. It is dedicated to the art of breeding the best fowl possible, the most noble, bright eyed, firm winged and fantastically feathered examples of the chicken or duck. These represent the poultry pinnacle – if these birds knew anything about genetics, or even anything about style and looking good they would know that they are at the top of a huge pyramid of their brethren.

There are some magnificent examples of the poultry breeder’s art (no snickering at the back please) to be found in the pages of Fancy Fowl magazine, shown off by some great photography. What we perhaps like best, however, is the wonderful sense of warmth of community you can feel from the pages, with pictures of beaming young’uns (and not-so-young’uns) holding trophies alongside their prize-winning birds. Excellent. NB
