High society represents a strange kind of anti-celebrity thing that we can’t quite put our finger on. Traditionally those considered celebrities have been drawn from the halls of the talented, the singers, musicians, actors and the like who have some form of skill that they show off to everyone else. Lately the celebrity culture has changed to also include those who are simply on the telly, people from reality TV programs who have no real discernable talent aside from the fact that they are there.

When Tatler was first created, way back in the 18th Century, we think that the nobles and gentry that formed the high society of the time were the equivalent of the reality TV celebrity – there was no reason for their success or position other than the fact that they were there – money, land and respect was something inherited. Perhaps that’s why tattler was created, to cater to the interest in those in the upper classes, their movements, styles and fashions. We can’t really know for sure.

Nowadays the young and high in society find themselves minor celebrities in their own right. The wheel has turned and we seem to be right back where we started. NB
