For some reason, Britain is unexpectedly good at cycling. We don’t quite know what it is – though we suspect that the heavy investment in the sport a good few years back may have more than a little to do with it, but nevertheless the best chance that we normally have of winning a medal at the Olympics is in cycling.
There are some illustrious people out there that became household names following the 2008 Beijing Olympics – think of Sir Chris Hoy, Jason Jenny and Jamie Staff as well as others. We would like to think that somehow cycling is a very British past-time, but that is not strictly true – after all it is the French who are famed for Tour-de-France that has been going for as long as anyone can remember.
We think we’ve found the answer actually – with the government forever closing down sports facilities across the country people have to travel further to do their sporting activity. As a result, kids have to cycle to get to the sports centre, and as a result become co-incidentally good at cycling. A very cunning ruse that one, and one that seems to have paid off.
We are also all in favour of tandem cycling being in the Olympics, simply because it would be hilarious. NB
