Building is a publication that has been covering the building and architecture world since 1843. Imagine the history to be found in the archives of this magazine, all the fantastic projects across the country that were carefully planned out and completed in the timespan that this magazine has been publishing.
If you’re looking for an example of the kind of brilliant yet slightly barmy project we’re talking about, you need look no further than the recent project to create a cable car system crossing the Thames. Essentially nothing more than a more durable, upmarket version of the kind of cable car used in ski resorts, the Thames Cable Car actually makes a lot of sense. Rather than needing a hefty, solid construction such as a bridge, the only footprint on the land is the terminals and the support tower. Apparently it was hugely complicated – requiring a 90 ton crane to put together the 300 ton crane needed to put t all together – but is should be complete and open for the summer of 2012.
When you think about it, a cable car public transport system actually makes as much if not more sense than an underground metro. There is much less work needed, little impact in terms of visuals – and any that there is being actually pleasing to the eye if you ask us. We would love to live in a city full of high towers bringing cable cars full of people from one place to another. It would feel like we were living in the future. NB
