American Songwriter is a fantastic read, particularly from the point of view of someone who can consider themselves to be in the enthusiastic amateur camp when it comes to songwriting. The music was often not a problem, but when it comes to the words it’s a different kettle of fish entirely.
A song is so much more than the sum of its parts – you can break it down to lyrics, chords, notes, fills and so on, and analyse each different instrument, but it is when everything comes together that it becomes clear. The meaning behind the words, the feeling behind the vocals and the music itself; though some may say that it is in no large part down to the performer in terms of how good a song is, there are songs that transcend the musician or singer. There is no better example of this than the classic Leonard Cohen song ‘Hallelujah’, covered by multiple artists who each added their own take on the song, yet it was nonetheless the same.
American Songwriter offers an engrossing glimpse into the world of songwriting, the famous names involved, the emerging talent and the history behind it, a read that we certainly don’t intend to pass up. NB
