The art of miniature rail began in the 1840’s with the Birmingham Dribblers, which were extremely popular toys in the Victorian era. The electric models came about in the 20th Century, and they have done nothing but progress in their level of technology and grown in popularity. As for the Garden Railways Magazine, that was launched in 1984 by Sidestreet Bannerworks, where the first issue was published in black and white and written on a typewriter! The model rail can be either electric or steam, and is more often than not decorated with miniature trees, buildings and even little model people to create that town-like feel. Many people feel they make an interesting and fun addition to the garden, and it is clearly a hobby that can keep people amused for hours. As the layout of these railways is often unique to the garden it has been set in, modellers tend to strive to make these railways distinctly their own, seeking out interesting types of plants and naming the railway something personal. There are many methods of radio control, some better than others, and of course, hundreds of different trains! If you are stuck on how to start, then go grab a copy of Garden Railways, and it’ll point you in the right direction.
