Walking is simple yet effective way of getting some exercise and clearing your head, especially if you’re lucky enough to be able to go walking in an area filled with natural beauty. I’ve never been to the Lake District, but I’ve been hiking all over Surrey, Hampshire, Kent, Devon and Somerset, all of which have delighted me and my friends with stunning views throughout the seasons.

My personal favourite walk is a short four mile stroll from a small fishing village called Beer in Devon across to a slightly larger village called Branscombe. You walk up through the trees and then over the cliffs surrounded by sheep looking out over the ocean. You can see nearly every single little house in Beer, and the whole village looks like a toy town built to perfect scale. I love watching the boats out fishing and the seagulls keeping a careful watch on which ones score a net full of bewildered looking mackerel.

The fresh air and the desire to push your muscles a little bit is incredibly satisfying, and you find yourself laughing at all the little things you were worried about, like what to wear and all the work you had to do when you got home. Admittedly, this is also one of my particular favourite walks because it leads you practically into a pub which serves the best ploughman’s sandwich in the world… but it’s about the journey, not the delicious destination…right?
