This quarterly mag offers features on and interviews with some of the most exciting young talent in UK art. There are thought-provoking opinion columns, intelligent analysis and of course some fantastic artwork. This is a wonderfully underground feeling art publication, featuring those beyond the mainstream and commercial art, and is an offshoot of the excellent Art Licks website. We almost feel bad featuring this rather excellent magazine in our store for the simple reason that we don’t want to blow their cover and expose them to the mainstream, commercial world. The artists featured in this excellent magazine do their best when they are creating challenging, exciting and new pieces that won’t necessarily make them any money. We are torn between not wanting to ruin the careful balance of individuality and freedom of work and wanting to shout from the rooftops “Have a read of Art Licks magazine, it’s pretty damn good!”
But then this represents part of the eternal artists’ conundrum. Unless you are famous, or even better notorious, and your works will sell regardless of what they are, you may well find that what will make you a living, put food on the table and pay the rent isn’t exactly what you want to be doing as an artist. Should you ‘sell out’, not pursue your dreams and inspirations on the basis that you can probably do those things later, and make commercially viable art, or should you stay true to your ideas and beliefs, and create the art you want to?
Of course you should do the latter – take the chance, run the risk and create some fantastic art – just like Art Licks, don’t let the art you make be dictated by the tastes of anyone else. NB
