The slightly gruesome fascination that causes us to be hugely interested in the kind of stories featured in both True Detective and the True Detective Specials can be hard to explain. We know we shouldn’t really want to read about terrible things but we all are secretly intrigued; it is the same reason why everyone slows down to try and get a look at a car crash – we know that we shouldn’t but we are unavoidably drawn to it.

This fascination with crime and the solving of it has lead to a whole raft of police procedural shows in recent years that have had a focus on the forensics. Whilst in the past cop shows have focused on the investigators, there are now shows such as CSI and its New York and Miami counterparts, Bones and NCIS that give significant attention to the forensic technicians. We are unendingly interested in bullet hole, blood splatter, DNA and fingerprints for some rather hard to explain reason.

One interesting side-effect of the popularity of such shows is that there are far more people studying forensics than there are relevant jobs. Oh well, as long as they don’t end up murdering anyone just to prove their skills are useful… although that would make a great story for True Detective. NB
