Italy is unarguably famed for its style – something that can be observed in the proliferation of fashion labels, perfumes and designers from Italy that gain world-wide recognition. This is even further confirmed from a casual read through of Domus, a hugely high quality – printed on lovely paper and perfect bound – publication from the design culture in Italy. Of course, Italy is also known as the home of some of the most famous painters – the likes of Raphael, Botticelli, Caravaggio and Michelangelo – and some of the greatest minds – think Machiavelli and Da Vinci.
Why is it, though that this should be true of Italy? What has it got that other countries don’t? Well, here are a few of the potential factors we’ve identified:
Weather – it is always ridiculously sunny and hot in Italy, meaning that hard work is far too much effort. Staying inside and designing and painting (and scheming in the case of Machiavelli) is much more recommended.
Food – the Italians have some wonderful food, therefore they enjoy their meals more. A well fed person is a happy one, thus stimulating creativity.
Language – even the language in Italy is stylish, full of dramatic flourishes and ‘z’s. You can help but be elegant and stylish when you speak one of the romance languages.
Truth be told, we don’t really know why Italy has succeeded so well in the area of design, we are simply grateful for it. NB
