We try not to go by the book here at Newsstand. We’ll be honest and say Charlie & Lola is the magazine equivalent of Marmite. You either love it or hate it. It’s the oh so cuteness of it all - but written and drawn in a style all of it’s own, there’s really no other children’s series to compare it accurately to. We have to take our hats off as it’s also a well made magazine and a great one to keep and reread at bedtimes. The drawings and colours keep the “readee” entertained even after the umpteenth serving.
Continuing on with the honest approach, the story CD that comes with some issues is worth it’s weight in gold. It’s tricky to post and we do not thank it for that, but slot it in the CD player at home and listen to it all go quiet…that is, except for the persistent voice of Lola, oh so cutely annihilating the English language.
Due to the way the words and pictures are laid out in the Charlie and Lola magazines, we wouldn’t recommend this publication as one for children to read to themselves - it’s all laid out in quite a random fashion that’s probably not conducive…
I think we represented both sides of the coin with that review? Be in no doubt, though, that to buy Charlie & Lola is no bad move - plus only at Newsstand can you wait for a CD on the cover and buy just that issue.
