Founded in 1997, TPM or The Philosophers’ Magazine is an independent quarterly publication which is devoted to presenting top-class philosophy in an accessible and entertaining layout. It regularly includes interviews with leading philosophers as diverse as Simon Blackburn, Daniel Dennett, John Searle, Peter Singer and Slavoj Zizek. The magazine also includes interesting news, essays, reviews on new literature and fascinating regular columnists. The magazine describes the content itself as ‘thought provoking thoughts’ which we think sums up the magazine perfectly.

This magazine covers rather complicated issues in an easy to follow and straight forward way, readers need to not worry that the magazine will be too academic or overly complicated. Readers with an interest in philosophy will be able to easily follow the debates and discussions in the magazine. The magazine is produced to be an appealing small book style format, which makes it have a classy and good quality feel.

The magazine is split up into useful separate sections such as interesting review sections, essay sections and forum sections which often focus on a variety of different topics. These topics can be anything from children to enjoyment, employment or knowledge. We think readers can ponder interesting topics in a way they may never have before. The forum sections are particularly thought provoking because they cover such a wide variety of topics which we think will keep readers interested.

What we liked most about this magazine is that the philosophy discussed and the thoughts are always related to our modern lives in an interesting way, there is no outdated philosophy discussed in The Philosophers' Magazine. For example there will be forum sections which discuss pop culture. We read one article which analysed why we are drawn to tragic characters such as The Green Lantern. Apparently it is mostly because we can admire the hero aesthetically and disapprove of his actions ethically. There was also an interesting article in one issue which discussed morality and asked the question; can one live well without being good? So there you go; there’s something interesting to think about for a while.
