We think that the luxury watch is synonymous with luxury lifestyles – and you know it is, everyone always assumes that those with wealth will own a Rolex or two, or maybe something even nicer – because of the juxtaposition of cost with function.
For many of the finer things in life their purpose is either purely decorative or affected by their cost. A couple of examples would be some fabulously stylish earrings, studded with diamonds and made out of, oh let’s say platinum. Now, they have only one purpose – to be as striking and beautiful as possible, thus attracting the eye, something linked to how much they cost. Now, another example of the kind of things the well-off might purchase would be a high-powered sports car, such as a Ferrari or Lamborghini. The exorbitant cost of these vehicles is reflected in their performance, being far faster than the typical car.
Now, a watch serves a purpose – to tell the time. No matter how much you spend on it, it will never tell the time better than one that costs a mere hundred quid or so. The money doesn’t make it better, yet it does still have a purpose, unlike the earrings. What a luxury watch says, therefore, is that the wearer is so opulent that they can afford to spend significant sums on simple functions – quite the statement. NB
