Reality, but better. That seems to us to be the message sold by Practical Photoshop. I was initially a bit sceptical – the industry of taking photos of already beautiful men and women and enhancing them to super-human perfection has always seemed a bit iffy to me. After all, in a world where nearly everything is governed by image, creating false idols doesn’t seem a good move.
Practical Photoshop, however, tells a different story. Here photos are expertly manipulated to make them increasingly more astonishing, and there’s not an airbrushed celeb in sight (thankfully!). The use of Photoshop is astonishing in what it can achieve; a hand blended with the earth, an image of a tiger changed so that it is made up of words. These serve a purpose, and whether that is in advertising or simply to create astonishing new realities, the results are frankly mind-boggling. Anyone who claims that creating a magnificent image with a computer is less difficult or worthy than one created by hand is missing out on an astonishing array of wonders.
This magazine is great to read in order to understand the tricks of the trade even if you yourself are unskilled in the art. Pick up a copy of Practical Photoshop and you’ll never see the world the same again.
