We feel slightly unsettled by the male models to be found in magazines such as WFM + Men. This is not because of some kind of body issues, we are perfectly happy with how we look, thanks for asking, but instead due to the strange, focus-less yet piercing stares on their faces.
It must be tough being a model – you have worked hard to get where you are, spending hours down the gym and huge amounts of money on moisturiser and hair gel, and all you do is walk down a runway, and then walk back again. You have to have that blank, unfocused stare because photos are being taken from every angle. You have to wear whatever ridiculous outfit the designer has created, regardless of how much of a fool it makes you look.
Nevertheless, the combination of the blank yet focused stare, impressive physique and curious, often futuristic designs of clothes makes us feel a little like we are being threatened by hyper-fashionable android thugs from the future. That emotionless look, the complete lack of a smile or even a scowl, somehow makes these fellows seem to be less than human. Perhaps they are, and it’s a conspiracy from the future.
