Art, Culture and Azerbaijan. So sayeth the cover of Baku, a fantastically well put together and endlessly fascinating publication launched by the daughter of the Azerbaijan president, Leyla Aliyeva.
Focused on art, culture, fashion andall things Azerbaijanian, Baku is well written and excellently produced, and something of a niche favourite here at Newsstand. Azerbaijan has a fascinating mixture of the old and the new within its culture, and this is reflected in the contents of Baku – you’re just as likely to find the latest fashions inside it as you are to find stunning photography highlighting the best parts of the country.

Baku is clearly a magazine with a mission; to get the country of Azerbaijan out there into the mainstream, and let everyone know what a fascinating and surprisingly trendy place it is. We have to admit, we didn’t know too much about Azerbaijan before leafing through a copy of this large sized and well produced magazine, but we are now far better informed. Score one for the niche publications.
Baku features that wonderful and indefinable blend of features that we call ‘culture’ – one moment you will be reading about women’s football, the next looking at brilliant photography before being whisked away to hear about the Baku City Challenge GT Street Race. We often think of small countries such as Azerbaijan being influenced by its neighbours and the big powers such as America and China, but could it perhaps be asserting its dominance upon the cultural world stage. Perhaps this is even the beginning of a move from them to take over the world! Culturally speaking of course…. NB
