For most people, following a recipe from a magazine is very clear and straight forward. The same cannot be said for myself nor my sister, as we inadvertently destroyed our kitchen at home with cheese, flour, pastry and who knows what else. Our first mistake was not preheating the oven. And then not realising it wasn’t preheated. Our next mistake was rolling the pastry out as thin as possible so that we could fit more filling inside… and perhaps not paying a huge amount of attention to the portion outline. Our chicken and vegetable pastry plait turned out alright, a bit burnt/undercooked/overcooked in places, but I think edible is the best word to use.
Once we had successfully ‘cooked’ we looked around and barely recognised our mother’s normally immaculate kitchen. There was melted cheese all over the hob, flour scattered across the floor and a rather large amount of sad looking vegetable chunks littering the surfaces, hiding beneath piles of dirty cutlery and crockery.
Curious. The magazine recipe had no instructions on how to actually clean the place afterwards… I probably should have got some tips out of Candis, but instead I just blitzed everything with the suitable looking sprays from under the sink and shoved all the dirties in the disk washer. As much as my mother pretended to love our sumptuous creation, I don’t think anyone could pretend to love a broken dishwasher and a kitchen stinking of bleach.
