Australia seems remarkably similar to the UK, just cheerier, healthier, sunnier and with better beaches. Oh, and deadlier, so, so much deadlier. Snakes and spiders and (possibly) scorpions inhabit the Australia of our mind’s eye, not to mention the man-eating sharks that prowl just off the coast. So it’s not all good for the Aussies then.
They may be better looking than us Brits, have better places to swim, enjoy more glorious weather (though I bet secretly they wish for a spot of rain now and then), but… hmm, I rather lost where I was going with that. At least we’re better at cricket then they are. At the moment.
Perhaps it’s because the white population is derived from British prison colonies and thus share a sense of Britishness that the similarity exists. Whatever is the case, I can’t help but feel that Australia would be a great place to be, whether on holiday or as a permanent move. As long as I manage to avoid being killed by a spider, angered by the fact that I just disturbed its nice new home in the toilet, then Australia may well be the place for me. Time for a flick through Box Magazine and a few dreams of a sunnier life.
