For once when we say we think this magazine is backwards looking, we mean it as a compliment. Vintage Life goes a great way to recapturing some of the elegance and glamour of years now past. And this is really a great idea – and not only because so much vintage styling still looks great.
If there has ever been a need for evidence towards the Buddhist belief in re-incarnation and the cyclical nature of life, you really need look no further than the world of fashion. Designs, patterns, clothing and ideas come into fashion, then lose their edge, before returning after a suitable period as retro-chic. Nowhere is this better shown than in the current trend in sunglasses. Back in the 50s, 60s and 70s, big was in. Sunglasses seemed to cover half the face and for certain style icons – think Sophia Loren – this worked. Then things began to change, and the smaller, subtler shade was in vogue – think any character from the Matrix films. And just a few years ago, what should happen but a return of the big shade. Ladies now walk around, heads barely able to hold up the enormous weight of their oversized sunglasses, confident in their glamouroisity (that should be a word, get on the case OED).
Truly, things appear, leave, and then return. Now where on earth has my pen gone…. NB
