More on Knit Magazine

The word ‘knit’ is derived from the Old English word for ‘knot’, which is quite a logical naming process. Evidence of knitwear has been discovered to date back as early as the Ancient Egyptians, but the craft officially started to gain momentum in Paris in 1527 with the first knitting traders guild.

Unlike nowadays, knitting was originally a predominantly male profession, but since the invention of the knitting machine, knitting by hand became more of a hobby rather than a career choice, which is perhaps why the craft has transcribed over to be more based among females. The ‘knitting circle’ has been popular in the UK since the early 20th century and is showing no signs of slowing down, what with other knitting based crazes popping up all over the place, such as podcasting, knifing graffiti and setting knitting world records.

A key example of the latter is a woman who knitted a square of 10 by 10 stitches with a pair of knitting needles that were 3.5 metres long and 6.5 cm in diameter. Each to their own, I say, but it cannot be denied that knitting is a very worthwhile hobby, as well made knitwear can last a lifetime, such as the 7 foot long scarf my sister knitted for my 18th birthday, with my surname knitted in another colour!

Knit Magazine is in the Knitting and Crochet category and is just one of over 3,000 magazines now available at Newsstand, to browse recent front covers of Knit Magazine, please click here.
