There comes a time in nearly every girl’s life when she decides she is going to give her hair a radical make over. Sometimes it works out beautifully and they stick with that style/colour for the rest of their life. Others, like yours truly, aren’t so lucky. I have extremely wavy hair which hinders any form of bob or pixie cut, so at the age of sixteen I decided to dye my beachy blonde tresses a warm chocolate brown. I’ve always dyed my own hair, but as this was such a dramatic change, I thought it would be best to head for a salon. I needn’t have spent the fifty odd quid… My hair came out varying shades of green and black. It was NOT a good look, but I was pleased with it nonetheless.
A few weeks later a box dyed it with a red tinged brown and it warmed up. It didn’t look that bad, but what I found strangest was how I felt like the blonde side of my personality had died. It sounds completely bizarre, but I think we underestimate how much our hair defines how others initially perceive us. As a brunette I became shy and faded into the background, not for any particular reason other than that when I looked in the mirror, I simply didn’t look myself. Whether my peers treated me any differently I will never truly know, but all I can say is that I am thrilled to be back to my scrubby blonde ways, and if you are planning to go for a mad change, really think about it and perhaps get some professional advice before you take the dive.
