Possibly the best named mag we stock here at Newsstand, and a firm favourite amongst the staff, Hot Rum Cow is a gorgeous publication featuring adventures in the world of drinking.
This wonderful new quaterly publication is written by those who appreciate a good tipple, and is full of good humour. You start with an Aperitif section, full of fascinating little vignettes and mini-interviews before diving straight into the features, an eclectic collection of articles joined by the theme of alcohol. You’ll find looks at bizarre and obscure drinks, examinations of distilleries and breweries, the history of drinking and drinks, comment and opinion columns and some ‘Interesting drinks worth trying’, to use their own words. We think this magazine is well worth a try as well.

For those of you who are wondering – which also included us before we took a long hard look at a copy with a glass of fine whisky (it’s what they would have wanted) – the name of Hot Rum Cow comes, perhaps unsurprisingly from a drink. A Hot Rum Cow is made with rum, hot milk, brown sugar and nutmeg, and is apparently rather marmite-esque in its appeal – you either love it or hate it, something that is an apt description of the magazine according to its editors.
Well, we can’t see why anyone in their right mind would dislike this rather wonderful Scottish publication, unless perhaps they were a teetotaller, though quite why they would read this magazine in the first place is a mystery. It offers a fascinating and well designed look at everything alcoholic, being one of those magazines where you can tell that a huge amount of love (and perhaps a fair amount of drink) has been poured into its creation. It is a refreshing, celebratory attitude towards the many different drinks in existence that is all too rare in this society, where we look down on drinking, seeing everyone who enjoys the odd glass as a binge drinker and taxing them accordingly.
So, raise a glass and let’s have a toast to the good people at Hot Rum Cow, the next round is on us. Cheers! *hiccup* NB
