It’s interesting how different drinks have different images associated with them. Cider is drunk by rosy-cheeked farmers in Somerset (pronounced zummerzet by anyone local, for anyone not local) before, after and no doubt during their day’s work. Beer splits into two – firstly, ale is drunk by beardy fellows who actually know what the specific gravity of a beer means and don’t care that they’ve accidentally dipped their beard in their beer. Secondly, lager is drunk (and that’s a very appropriate word there) by football fans before a nice spot of rioting. Vodka is drunk by young women who then proceed to fall over a lot, and gin is drunk by morose women, sitting on their stairs wondering what has become of their life. Oh, and we all know who drinks a certain beer that rhymes with Bella Martois...
Okay, that was a horrible bit of typecasting, and I apologise unreservedly to you all. Wine, however, has an interestingly paradoxical nature. Not only is it drunk by the upper classes with their fine dining, but it is also guzzled by winos on the streets. As ever, the truth is nowhere near these, and wine is instead the drink of choice for those who actually appreciate the taste of what they are drinking at a reasonable cost.
Let’s not get started on people who drink champagne outside of special events...
