The problem we always had with canoeing and kayaking wasn’t the sport itself, it was the capsizing. You’re always well instructed by guide or bloke in the hire shop on exactly what to if such an event should occur, but nothing can really quite prepare you for that moment when, after horsing around a little and maybe trying to show off you ‘skillz’ you accidentally wobble too far and end up upside down. The water hits you hard, cold. Sudden panic sets in. It is simple enough to remember that you merely have to disentangle yourself and you will be okay, but not simple to remember that when you think you’re drowning. Then you remember that you are in only a couple of feet of water, and that everything will be okay.
Canoe & Kayaking will probably help prepare you for such panic-y circumstances, but what it does best is show off the rewarding side of the hobby – the glorious trips down river, the exploration of waterways, gentle paddles and exciting rapids. However you like your canoeing and kayaking, you will find it well covered in this impressively comprehensive magazine. Now that we’re over the memory of capsizing, we think we might just revisit it. See you on the river! NB
