It may surprise you to learn that UFC has only been going since 1993. Despite this it is the current world leading MMA brand, bringing you the biggest fights and the toughest competitors around.
MMA was a bit of a genius idea frankly. For hundreds of years people had been fighting in their strictly confined disciplines, using only the methods and techniques approved by the governing boards of their particular form of fighting. The questions everybody wanted answered were things like ‘what happens when a boxer fights someone who knows karate?’, yet they seemed doomed to remain only an imaginary exercise. MMA takes this out of the imaginary and into the real world, essentially a grown up version of ‘yeah, well my dad knows ju-jitsu and could totally take your dad in a fight’.
MMA brings some fascinating match-ups, and helps us answer the question of which is the greatest discipline, only to be reminded that so often it is the person not the style which wins a fight. There are no rules in real life fighting, no referee to make sure that you only use appropriate holds and punches. Why settle for anything as artificial as one of the traditional disciplines? Mix things up with MMA. NB
