Everybody loves footy when they are young. Find me a 7-14 year old who passionately detests footy and I’ll say, ‘ah yes that’s a girl’. Good point there. Let me revise that a little – Every boy loves footy when they are young.
It is most likely that the love of this sport comes from playing it. Pretty much every kid spent at least some time playing for a youth side, whether it was for their village, school, town or a club in one of the cities, we all had at least some exposure to it. I remember well the freezing cold mornings, ground crackling with frost beneath my studs, running around until near exhausted, the oranges at half time…
Now, I don’t want to sound like I’m dropping names, but once when I was younger I got to meet Jimmy Hill. I didn’t really know who he was at the time, having been just awarded the ‘most improved player’ (read – less worse than before) award for my village’s Under 11 side, and they had somehow roped old Jimmy into giving out the awards. All I remember of it was his impressive chin.
So, if your kid’s dead mad on footy, Match of the Day mag is the perfect read for those times when he isn’t out training. Who knows, he might get to meet Jimmy Hill too (though that might need to be soon). NB
