Established in New York 1949 the first issue of Monthly Review contained an article called ‘Why Socialism?’ written by Albert Einstein himself. The magazine speaks for socialism and is avidly against U.S. imperialism. Monthly Review is now a leading independent socialist magazine. It is produced in a small book format and will contain essays in each issue from prominent Socialists worldwide with fascinating photography and interesting debates.

This magazine has been going now for a huge length of time, it began when there was great upheaval in America at the time of the Cold War. That fact that the magazine has lasted so long is a testament to the editors and contributors who have written for it over the years. The magazine industry is pretty cut-throat and new magazines find it very difficult to start up and get a proper following. This magazine is obviously written with care and attention and has a loyal following of readers which have kept it going for such a long time.

The contents are a mix of commentary and academic essays and reviews of other people’s literature. The content is all pretty intellectual stuff with lengthy pages discussing various different points of view and different arguments. The magazine likes to stress that it is independent from any particular political party. It instead wants to focus on arguing against capitalism, imperialism and being an activist when it comes to the matters of great importance.

The magazine runs on the basis of a charity and is maintained by subscriptions and contributions by readers and supporters.
