At the time of writing, the Newsweek Special looks at The Beatles. The Beatles really are an astonishing phenomenon. There has never been, and never will be to be honest, another band that will manage to scale the heights they achieved. In this age of digital downloads and fast popularisation and sharing it is entirely possible that another band or musician will sell more copies, have more weeks at number one or any of the thousand other metrics by which success is measured.
No other band will ever match the cultural phenomenon that was the Beatles however. Everybody knows at least one or two songs by the Beatles, can quote a few lines from a couple of different songs lyrics. Regardless of where, when and how you have lived your life everybody is aware. Perhaps part of it is down to the incredible success they had n breaking America, something it is notoriously hard for a musician to do. Perhaps it was because they wrote beautiful, inspirational music, and evolved and developed their sound through the years until it sounded better than ever. Maybe it is due to their foray into weird and exciting films, who knows. Whatever it is, the world will never see the likes of them again. I am the egg-man. I am the egg-man. I am the Walrus. NB
