There is a certain stereotype lingering around men and cars. Conveniently, my father definitely followed suit by cracking at the age of forty five and purchasing his childhood ultimate dream car. His beloved Morgan 4/4 has it’s own home in the garage, booting out the run around Honda Jazz to make way for a dehumidifying machine to prevent wood root.
The Morgan 4/4 has been in pretty much continuous production in Britain since it’s initial unveiling in 1936 barring a wartime pause and a four year break in the fifties. My Dad often reiterates his first experience with a Morgan whenever cars come up in conversation. ‘I wasn’t allowed inside the pub so I had to play outside with Gavin (his younger brother) and we were running into that car park and there was a Morgan parked outside. It was navy blue and the best car I’d ever seen.’ He swore that he would eventually buy one for himself one day, and so he did.
Unfortunately, it happened to catch fire on the M25 due to a fault and the classic ash frame, but once she’d been fixed up as good as new, it was once again my father’s pride and joy. It cannot be denied that the vintage style little sports car turns heads, and though I can tell it’s a little difficult to drive, it’s marvellously practical. There’s plenty of leg room, a decent heater so you’re warm even when the roof is down and a rack on the back for suitcases. Honestly, an open top car is all very well, but there is nothing quite like curling up in the passenger seat on a late night journey to Devon, looking up at a perfectly star speckled sky whilst smelling the leather of the seats and hearing the roar of the engine on an empty road.
