Every aspiring photographer needs to know the basics, and that’s not just technically. The best photographers manage to create images that evoke emotion in the audience, and there are tonnes of ways to do it. As useful as image manipulation programmes such as Photoshop are, I see more talent in those photographers who have an eye for a shot and a split second to get capture that individual moment.
Being a photographer myself I admire those who still use film photography to great effect, as I know how frustrating and difficult the process can be. We have become too comfortable what with digital cameras that are able to store thousands of images, to the extent that it is now so easy to take a good photograph. Even if you haven’t, if it’s over exposed or off colour, one can just edit the image in seconds on your computer.
While these innovations are amazing, it makes me sad that so many wonderful images and memories will never make it off our computers. This is why I love putting the time and patience into the dark room, to develop that snapshot perfectly. The dark room is a wonderful place, and working with your images is wonderfully therapeutic. Perhaps it is not for everyone, but it is common knowledge that photographs are meant to be seen. Next time you take a trip, or even just brandish a camera at your friends and family in the garden, print a few off and stick them on the fridge.
