Koi’s are an ornamental variety of the common carp and are originally found in large groups in central Asia. Koi’s tend to have a common body shape but vary hugely in an array of vibrant colours and patterns, which is probably why they are so popular in garden pond decoration.
Particular breeds can reach prices of anything up to or over £500 depending on the rareness of the breed or the size of that particular fish. Sadly, due to their vibrant exterior Koi Carp are an easy target for predators such as herons, otters, cats and even raccoons and hedgehogs, which is why most people tend to cover their pond with fine and secure wire caging. They are rarely found in the wild, and have accidentally and purposefully released. However, within a few generations they revert back to the same colouration as the common carp as a result of cross breeding and adapting for survival.
These fish have a remarkable ability to adapt, which is why they are so popular and successful at surviving in various locations all over the world. In my experience at working at a garden centre that sold Koi Carp, they are amazingly bold and will let you stroke them as long as you bribe them with food!
